A lot of comic and game fans were stricken with disappointment when Microsoft announced they were not going forward with a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) iteration of the Marvel Universe. We were left to live out our superhero fantasies with City of Heroes or City of Villains with no hope in sight. Thankfully the people at Sony Online Entertainment came to the rescue. While their idea is not based on Marvel, they are putting together a MMO that takes place in the DC universe. Jim Lee, the games executive creator director can only describe the game as a "kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game."

Those are mighty strong words to live by. So what can we expect from this title? We won't be able to pick any of our favorite heroines to start. This is reasonable considering this game will be played by hundreds of people at the same time. It just wouldn't be any fun if there were fifty Superman characters with different colored hair flying around at the same time. Don't worry though, we'll still be able to interact with DC characters in-game. You'll be able to make your own persona at the beginning. The only facts given about the abilities you have are using fire or ice as attacks. Flight will be an option, as well as teleportation. As you gain experience you'll get stronger and unlock new abilities in true MMO fashion.

We should expect to visit familiar locales as well. Metropolis and Gotham City are two of the locations known. The various environments try to keep everyone's interests up. DC Universe Online will also feature PvP battles. The potential for massive fights in the streets and air will indeed skyrocket when the game ships for the PS3 and PC.
